Open-air sculptural installation, Kunst & Zwalm biennial, curated by Manoeuvre & Nadine, Zwalm region (BE), 2023

Elen Braga's work is rich and multilayered, intimately tied to the local context of her environment. For Kunst & Zwalm, she was inspired by a traditional handmade wooden anchor used in fishing rafts and canoes along the northeastern coast of Brazil, particularly in her home region of Ceará. This cultural reference sparked her exploration of materials. In creating her anchor sculpture, Braga discovered local Balegem limestone, formed by ancient seas, and marble dust from processing in the nearby town of Zottegem. She combined these elements in her large sculpture, Feed the Beasts and Feed the Children (2023), which harmonizes different cultural references in an open field, symbolizing balance and interconnectedness.

Braga's artistic vision is deepened by her reflections on life cycles, citing Joseph Campbell's idea that "life lives on life. This concept, illustrated by the Ouroboros—a snake that consumes its own tail—emphasizes the interdependence of living beings. It contemplates how the stone may eventually turn to dust, emphasizing the cyclical nature of existence and the relationship between life, death, and the environment.
