The Course of Empire (2022) is a hand-tufted tapestry on a wooden frame. With this panoramic installation, Braga engages with the eponymous series of five paintings by the English painter Thomas Cole (1801-1848), in which he depicts the rise and fall of an imaginary empire. In Braga's version, for example, a protesting crowd with placards appears, as does a cat. In her work, the popular pet is a reference to the abundance of cat photos and videos on social media, which always seem to drown out more weighty images.
